A Closer Look at Hospitality Management

January 17, 2023

HEGG Hospitality specializes in the hospitality management of full-service and select-service hotel segments. From guests to investors, owners and stakeholders, we take hospitality very seriously. With HEGG Hospitality, we ensure all aspects of the business are running smoothly, from overseeing day-to-day operations to taking care of our guests. In this article, we’ll take a closer look into the world of hospitality management and see what it really takes to make a hotel run like a well-oiled machine.

Day-to-Day Operations with an Emphasis on Guests

When it comes to managing ten hospitality properties, we have a formula we use to ensure each property is managed with efficiency, all while maintaining a high level of service for all of our guests. While each hotel property presents its own unique challenges, day-to-day operations are similar across each of our properties, from staffing to cleaning to regularly reviewing and updating safety plans, training staff on the latest safety protocols, and making sure that our facilities are properly maintained.

In addition, the guest experience is essential for any successful hotel and is a top priority at HEGG. We focus on creating a positive experience for each and every customer by anticipating guests’ needs before they arrive, providing efficient check-in and check-out procedures, and responding quickly to requests. In order to achieve this high level of customer service, we must first understand our different guests. At our Hilton Garden Inn Sioux Falls Downtown, the clientele is more business and busier during the week, while at our Hilton Inn Sioux Falls South, we see more families staying over the weekends, and at our two Marriott properties (The Courtyard and SpringHill Suites) by the Empire Mall, it is a mix of both business and family guests, as well as teams traveling for games. Knowing the types of guests that stay at our different properties helps us serve them best.

The Importance of Housekeepers in Hospitality

Across each property, housekeepers are the lifeline of the hotel and keep the operations running smoothly, day in and day out. They are responsible for ensuring that all areas are clean and presentable at all times. They work at efficient speeds and are responsible for cleaning 1,098,500 square feet per year, per housekeeper, and are usually given 28.8 minutes per room to get it cleaned. On average, one housekeeper cleans 65 rooms and makes 98 beds per week (that’s 3,380 rooms and 5,096 beds per year)!

As we were coming out of COVID, our housekeeping teams were short-staffed. During this time, HEGG increased housekeepers’ wages to $19/hr – making us one of the highest-paying hotels. During this time, Dione, our Director of Brand Experience stepped in to help staff turn rooms for 6 months. Our CEO, Paul also joined and spent time cleaning and fixing rooms while additional help was needed and until more employees were hired.

This is one of the many unique things about our approach to hospitality management — our leadership team is ready to step in and help our teams when needed to get the job done and ensure our guests are taken care of. It’s the HEGG way.

Hospitality Facts to Know

Lastly, we’re taking a look into some unique hospitality facts. Did you know…

  • Every towel and linen are folded in the same exact way, soap is placed in the same spot, as well as other toiletries – it’s part of the housekeeping process and is meant to make turning rooms easier.
  • Every day, a laundry attendant will take 5 trips with carts to the floors to make linen drops.
  • We also rotate all hotel mattresses every 90 days. This is done about 130 times per hotel per quarter, which is almost 5,000 rotations per year!
  • We provide 960 complimentary bottles of water to our guests per week (or 49,940 bottles of water per year).
